At the end of this school year (the week of the Memorial Day holiday), Nathan’s long-time caregiver, friend and surrogate mother, Jennifer, will be moving to Auburn. Jennifer has cared for Nathan for most of the past 6 years or more. Jennifer and her boys are like family to us, and will be sorely missed.
Nathan is 17 years old, has Down Syndrome, and is a Junior at Grissom High. He is not quite old enough for programs available for ages 18+, but would still fit in well with these groups if an exception could be made. He attends Project UP at Merrimack Hall, is a member of the Madison County Special Olympics Swim Team, participates in other Special Olympics activities and in Miracle League. The current plan is for him to continue attending Grissom until he ages-out at 21.
This summer break will be 10 weeks long, and I’m looking for coverage from ~8A to ~5:30P (roughly 8 hours at work plus my travel time) Monday through Friday. Nathan will be away at camp the week of June 29 through July 4, so it’s actually 9 weeks. I prefer to bring Nathan to your home. Recent summers have been covered by one caregiver the entire week, but having different caregivers on different days could also work, especially if the schedule could be static from week to week (one caregiver on Monday and Tuesday, another on Wed. through Friday, week after week for example). If you’re willing to help, I’m flexible. Even if it would be less than a full day.
This coming fall I will need someone to pick up Nathan at Grissom High after school (~3:15P) and keep him until I can pick him up (again, ~5:30P). Jennifer has been an aide in Nathan’s classroom the past couple of years, which was ideal. If any other parent or aide working in Nathan’s classroom or school would be willing to help I would greatly appreciate it. Again, this would not necessarily need to be the same person every day of the week, as long as we could work out a predictable routine from week to week.
I would not rule out help from certain high school students, either. I find the volunteers helping with the special needs classes at Merrimack Hall to be exceptional people, and I know they would work well with Nathan.
I am in dire need of help with Nathan, and the end of May is rapidly approaching. Please reply if you can help, or if you know someone who can.

Anyone have the interest and time to take the lead and find a crew to do the entry to Botanical Garden’s
Scarecrow Trail for for Merrimack? I am already late in getting back to Melissa on this…She called me Friday to see if anyone could take the lead and do this and I have been soooo busy I just haven’t been able to sit down to the computer til now.
She just needs to know if someone will take the lead and find people to work on and get this done and Merrimack will register and pay for it. All the deadlines, dates and times for getting it ready and installed are in the attached flyer from Botanical Gardens and are all coming up quickly. I need to let her know ASAP….or if you are interested just email Melissa and cc me so I know she has been answered. I forwarded the info to you in this email so you would know what it is, but she asked us not to fill out forms or register – just let her know and she will register it. A PVC form for the scarecrow has to be picked up very soon so they need to know whether to have one reserved.
Melissa said she did this last year and it wasn’t hard or that time consuming, but thought some parents might come up with a cute idea for Merrimack.

What incredible news to share!!! Merrimack Hall’s very own Project Up/Element group in “Waiting on the World to Change” has been invited to dance on stage at the Dizzy Feet Foundation’s National Dance Day Celebration Gala in Los Angeles on July 27, 2013. They will share the stage with the American Ballet Theatre, the stars of “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing with the Stars,” Axis Dance Company and other of the world’s most talented dancers. In the audience will be luminaries in the dance world and entertainment industry. This performance opportunity is a game-changer for Merrimack Hall’s Johnny Stallings Arts Program and potentially for people with special needs everywhere. It is a chance to get the message that we are more alike than different and that a diagnosis doesn’t mean a person deserves any less!! That there is no such thing as “typical” and that programs like this one can and should be available everywhere!! Can you imagine if every child that wanted to be a part of a program like ours had that chance in every area of our nation and beyond!! This is a huge big step toward opening this idea up to the world!!
However, in order for this to happen we have to spread the word to our friends, family and co-workers because the only thing standing between Project UP and a standing ovation at The Music Center is money. Due to the last minute nature of this invitation, we do not have the budget to send 10 dancers, 3 teachers and 8 parents to Los Angeles for 4 days. We need to raise approximately $15,000.00 to give these kids their shot at this dream – and Debra and the staff a chance to show the world the beauty of this program! The staff has put so much into this program now we need to help them get this trip funded!!

No more last minute stops at the store to pick up a bouquet for your dancer just before the recital. The JSAP Booster Club will be selling flower bouquets at the recital this year!
We will be offering single roses with ribbon for $5, a group of 3 roses with ribbon for $10 and a spring mix bouquet with ribbon for $20.
Just send a quick email to me to reserve your flowers and we will have them for pick up in the lobby just before the recital begins…how easy is that?!
When you email to reserve, be sure to give me your name and which flower option you would like. You can pay with cash or check at pick up.
We will be taking reservations until Tuesday, April 30th. We will have a limited number of extra flowers at the recital which will be sold on a first come, first served basis.
